Approximately 6, adults in Lane County have a severe psychiatric disability. Of those, about 2, are not currently receiving supported housing services. At any point in time, as many as individuals with mental illness are homeless in Lane County. A study, conducted by the National Coalition for the Homeless, found that untreated mental illness is the third largest cause of homelessness. Many avoid treatment due to shame, anxiety, fear, and mistrusting doctors or other people in power. These feelings are often a result of traumatic life experiences such as abuse, assault, and sexual traumas.
