In this recipe, we swap sugar for orange juice and honey. We absolutely love this recipe — the chicken is almost addictive. The recipe is simple, quick, and provides lots of opportunities for making it in advance.
Read on for our tips for making the sauce, the best cut of chicken to use, and our favorite way to cook it. Thanks to our homemade sauce , teriyaki chicken is very easy to make! The sauce takes 10 minutes to make and can be made days, if not weeks, in advance. You can do this a variety of ways:. Just like many of the chicken recipes on Inspired Taste, we prefer skinless, boneless chicken thighs when making chicken teriyaki. Thighs are more tender, cook quickly, and have more flavor than chicken breast.
Traditionally, teriyaki chicken cooks over a grill. You could do that with this recipe, but we wanted to figure out a way to get all the benefits of a grill inside. The answer is to broil the chicken. The cooking process takes about 15 minutes, and if you spoon or brush a little sauce over the chicken while it cooks, the sauce turns into a glaze and becomes shiny — just like at the best teriyaki restaurants.
It will still taste incredible! You can find the instructions for a larger batch in our teriyaki sauce recipe click here for the recipe. The recipe makes 2 cups, which provides enough sauce for two batches of chicken. The sauce stores for weeks in the fridge. Combine the soy sauce, sugar, sake, vinegar, and ginger in a small bowl.
Stir until the sugar completely dissolves. Transfer about 6 tablespoons of the sauce to a resealable plastic bag or container and add the chicken. Marinate the chicken in the refrigerator, turning once, for at least 30 minutes, preferably longer.
Add the remaining sauce to a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring it to a simmer and cook until the sauce reduces slightly and looks shiny; 3 to 5 minutes.
If it reduces too much, add a bit of water to bring it back to a pourable consistency. Cool, and then save this in the refrigerator to use as a sauce for the cooked chicken.
Position an oven rack towards the top of the oven, about 6-inches from the broiler. Heat the broiler to high. Line a baking sheet with foil, and then arrange the chicken so that the side that would have had skin is facing down. Spoon a bit of the marinade that was with the chicken on top and discard the rest. Broil for 5 minutes. Stay close to the oven to keep an eye on the chicken as it cooks.
Flip the chicken, and then if there are any juices or sauce pooling on the pan, spoon or brush it back onto the chicken. Doing this a few times during cooking helps to add a shiny, browned crust to the chicken. I will definitely keep rotating it into my meals! Thanks for sharing. I made this teriyaki sauce this evening for grilled chicken! Hands down the best homemade teriyaki sauce!
This will be my go to recipe from now on. Thank you so much. I followed this recipe to a T. It is taking way longer to thicken up and am not sure it ever will. Smells good but the rest of the dinner is done.
Hopefully it thickened up for you. It should thicken up pretty quickly with the cornstarch, so you might want to do a quick double check to make sure the quantities you added were correct. Hopefully it all worked out! This is really good. Definitely a keeper and will be using again.
New to cooking. Hmmm, the sauce is pretty thick and pretty dark. I have to give the recipe 5 stars, if I could give more I would.
I have never left a comment on a recipe before, but I had to for this one. I also add a teaspoon, or more to taste, of seasoned rice wine vinegar. This is an excellent base from which to start! I made this for my family with a tofu stir fry and everyone wanted seconds!
I used arrowroot powder, coconut sugar, fresh ginger and agave nectar as substitutes and it was fabulous. The sauce was definitely dark and thick and delicious! Only thing I modified is slightly less brown sugar. This was good but a little weak! Next time I might sub chicken broth for the water to give a little more flavor.
I made this recipe and it turned out perfect! This will now be my go to recipe for this sauce. Thanks for sharing it. JUST finished making this for our family dinner tonight.
My kids are excited to try this! Only thing I didnt have was rice vinegar…I had several other types but was out of this. Served with some chinese noodles! Thanks for this cant wait to make this again. I have put some on diced chicken fillets to marinade overnight and will make chicken skewers with them tomorrow.
I added a bit more ginger for my taste and canned the excess for later. Perfect for meal prep. Spot on. Love this sauce! But we all have different tastes and this is a perfect recipe to adjust to a persons liking. This has become my go to teriyaki recipe! I work for an assisted living and recently made teriyaki wings and they loved it! Made this for family and friends last night. This will be a permanent recipe for our family. Thanks for this. I added a dash of apple cider vinegar as it was quite sweet and it was spot on.
Thanks again!! My daughter and i love it! So muchso, that my daugter could just drink it if i let her! So easy and quick to make. This is Devine.. I chop up chicken thighs and coat in corn flour and fry with a bit of oil in pan, once cooked I coat in this teriyaki sauce serve with salad with pickled ginger and rice..
It is very easy and flavorful but it was too sweet for me so I added more of everything else and then it turned out very nice. This is a really delicious recipe. I made it on the spur of the moment. Everyone loved it. I used it with stir fry and tofu with rice. I made it today and used it to season wok stir-fried noodles. So good! It took minutes of whisking the ingredients over med-high heat to douse the bubbles, deepen the sauce to a dark, rich brown, thicken it to a perfect consistency, and meld all the flavors after adding the water-cornstarch mixture.
I cut the packed brown sugar to 4T, used 1. I like knowing making it from scratch means one less store-bought glass bottle to buy and recycle.. Thanks Deborah! I just made to use for a large church dinner so I quadrupled the recipe, then added more soy sauce and a little water. The flavor is intense and delicious. And the it should thicken up. My guess is that it would freeze just fine, though. And it should last weeks in the refrigerator, although we always go through it much faster than that!
Perfect on salmon. I added garlic and fresh ginger. And a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar other wise so good. Better than the jar. I made it for my daughter and son-in-law on gang night because we were having wings and they love teriyaki hot. I followed the recipe but added a touch of cayenne and some curry along with some black pepper and about a quarter cup of Texas Pete wing sauce.
I have made this recipe a few times and always love it, this is my definite go-to for my stir fry dinners,. We absolutely loved this sauce!
I had all the ingredients on hand for teriyaki chicken except the sauce , fortunately I had all the stuff to make it homemade!! My husband wants me to make more to keep on hand. I used only about 3 Tbs. Perhaps a bit more garlic as well. The consistency of the sauce was nice, though. Great recipe. Mix in some pineapple juice for another sweet treat and it turns Hawaiian.
I made my teriyaki sauce last week around Tuesday. I bottled it up in a mason jar. I loved it! I substituted soy sauce with Coconut aminos, and brown sugar with date sugar. So good!!! This recipe was tasty and super simple to put together! Great sauce for chicken and broccoli. Thank you for sharing!
Loved this recipe. It was a tad sweet for us so I added a bit more soy sauce and a touch of balsamic vinegar. It was perfect!! Made it today. So yum! I used fresh ginger, too. Added a bit of chili flakes, sesame oil and vinegar to balance out the flavours. Definitely a keeper! This is a brilliant recipe, thank you! This is an amazingly easy and super delicious teriyaki sauce.
My whole family loved it including my 5 year old daughter who are every little bit in her bowl. Highly recommended!! Came out perfect! I added a tablespoon of rice vinegar as I like the tartness.
Was good both with and without. This sauce is great! I have a picky eater and he loved it, too. I love that I already have all of these ingredients around pretty much all the time. Thank you for the recipe. I did put the ingredients through a mesh strainer after making the sauce, just to make sure it was perfectly smooth on behalf of aforementioned picky eater!
I love how you cook the sauce to thicken it. My 12 year old grandson is learning to cook. We are going to make this the next time we have chicken wings. Made it with some grilled chicken and asparagus and they made a great trio together. A must keep recipe; thank you for sharing your recipe with us and keep this going!
Delicious, I did add one more clove of garlic just because…. Maggis has way less salt and way better flavor. Will make it again and again. Thank you. This is a great recipe! I used it for some sliced turkey kielbasa, red onion, and peppers to serve over rice. I also added some canned pineapple and a little of the pineapple juice. Wow, this is excellent! Substituted 1 tbsp sugar with 1 tbsp hon mirin and only used 1 tbsp corn flour.
This sauce was perfect! Such a yummy sauce. I made it for grilled chicken pieces and sprinkled sesame seeds on the pcs.
It was such a winner. We had to substitute flour for corn starch but other wise prepared as prescribed. Very good on steak as well as dumplings, and fried rice. Will punch it up a bit next time as I like hot spicy with the sweet.
I do not! This recipe is spot on and delicious! Have been hunting for a recipe to replace our sushi teriyaki sauce that is no longer made. This is perfect and the kids even gave it a full thumbs up of approval. Very good! It was a little sweet, but will use this again for sure maybe less honey. I wanted to make a good shrimp stir fry for dinner tonight. This sauce is going to be perfect. I made this recipe twice and they are so good.
I ran out of the honey for the second batch and I used maple syrup. It turned out wonderful as the batch I used honey! Thank you!!!! The idea of using maple syrup never occurred to me. Great recipe and so easy! I used fresh grated ginger to give it extra zing — it turn out as good or better than the store bought kind and a lot less expensive.
I normally have never liked store bought teriyaki sauce but I tried this recipe and it was amazingly delicious!!!! I would definitely recommend it for anyone to try. Also it is super easy to make and homemade is always better and cheaper. I made as directed. Very good base though! This is beyond amazing. My girlfriend and I loved it. So good. Wish I would have found this years ago, so easy and quick to make.
Easy and fast! I used it for steelhead purchased at Costco as well as a topping for brown rice. I doubled the recipe and will try putting in freezer bags. Next time, I will finish with sesame seeds. This was easy to make and tasty! Absolutely love this teriyaki sauce and so does my guy Mr.
